Educated at Trinity College, Dublin,〔“Who was Who” 1897-2007 London, A & C Black, 2007 ISBN 978-0-19-954087-7〕 he was ordained in 1900.〔"The Clergy List, Clerical Guide and Ecclesiastical Directory" London, John Phillips, 1900〕 His first post was a curacy at Youghal after which he was Vicar of Shandon. in 1926 he became Archdeacon of Cork then its Diocesan Bishop .
